UNIVERSITIES OF AGRICULTURE IN NIGERIA

DEFINITION OF AGRICULTURE:  In simple terms, it is the science and art of cultivation of certain plants and rearing and management of livestock. It is derived from the Latin words ‘ager’ or “agri’ and “cultura” meaning soil/field and cultivation respectively.

Agriculture is a professional field which combines pure sciences and the social sciences in the cultivation of crops and rearing of animals for man’s use and benefits, such as provision of food, raw materials for industries, recreation etc.

On a broader note, agriculture may also be defined as the set of skills and processes geared towards the production of food, feed, fibre, energy, medicine, recreational services and other essential commodities by the growing or cultivation of certain plants, fungi and other life forms and the raising of certain selected animals of importance to humanity.
