 Automotive  engineering is one of the branches of vehicle engineering which incorporates the knowledge and principles of mechanical, electrical, electronic, software, safety engineering to design, produce and operate, assemble and repair road vehicles, e.g.; lorries and trailers, cars, motorcycles, buses, tricycles and others.

  Automotive engineering is an engineering field focusing on the design, development, production of road vehicles and their associated safety systems. It is a branch of engineering under vehicle engineering alongside aerospace and naval engineering.

NB: vehicle is a general term machines that transports people and goods and it includes; wagons, bicycles, motor vehicles, railed vehicles, watercraft, amphibious vehicles, aircraft and spacecraft.

Automotive/automobile engineering includes in its study and scope, the design, development, fabrication and testing of road vehicles and their components from the concept stage to the production stage.

  Automotive engineers work closely with other engineers to improve features and technical performance of automotives/automobiles. It also involves great deal of research and it’s one of the most challenging fields of engineering with wide scope.

 Some of its areas include;

Automobile engineering – focuses on manufacturing, design and mechanisms of automobiles and subcomponents as well as automobile operation and testing. It deals with motorcycles, cars, trailers, trucks, tricycles, buses and other automobiles.

Safety engineering – it is associated with industrial and systems engineering, focusing on accident prevention and reduction of risks arising from human errors and technical failures. Safety engineering in automobiles aims to test and assess various crash scenarios and impact on vehicle users or occupants. It is applied to product design and manufacturing in ensuring safety of operations.

 Some of the testing includes; front and side impact testing, seat belt and airbag functionality testing, rollover resistance testing etc.

 Automotive electronics – concerned with electronic systems used in vehicles. Some of such systems include; engine management systems, ignition, radio, lighting, telematics, carputers and in-car entertainment systems. This area of automotive engineering is very much important as it is responsible for operational controls as well as comfort and convenience of automobile users. Most modern vehicles feature many of these electronic systems.

NVH engineering – studies and modifies noise and vibration arising from the operation of vehicles. It involves the testing and analysis of noise, detectable vibrations in vehicles as well as providing solutions suitable for its optimization. NVH (Noise,Vibration&Harshness) engineers performs sound and vibration testing to prevent loud noises and detectable vibrations in automobiles.

Other areas of automotive engineering include; performance engineering, durability/corrosion engineering, assembly feasibility, fuel emissions/economy, quality and shift management.
