It is somewhat bitter to discover that some yet-to-be
scholars and academicians are struggling on the right study strategies and
methods. Studying is an essential tool needed by individuals to widen their
horizon in their various fields.
Adopting good study
habits is paramount for students and other individuals whose
responsibilities/endeavors demand varying degrees of studies.
There are so many benefits
or importance attached to good study habits or what we may call effective study
habits, since the aim of studying is to achieve progress and good results.
Is studying the same
thing as reading?
The both are often confused terms. Let’s see and examine the
difference.
According to the 9th Edition of Oxford Advanced
Learners dictionary, the word read means , To look at and understand the
meaning of written/printed words or symbols.
Reading is a process of perusing or going through a
topic/subject in order to obtain meaning from it. Or simply, it means to look
at printed and written things to understand their meaning.
On the other hand, study is the application of time, effort
and attention in order to gain knowledge by means of reading, investigation,
research and analysis.
Study is the activity of learning or gaining
knowledge, either from books or by examining things in the world, according to
the 9th Edition of Oxford Advanced Learners Dictionary.
Study is the process
of acquisition of deep or thorough understanding and knowledge of
concepts/topics.
From the above
definitions, we can now make distinction between reading and studying.
First, you can easily decipher that reading is a subset of
study. Hence studying is a broader concept with reading as an integral aspect. Reading
is also known as the first step of study, you may read to understand, but not
to acquire in-depth knowledge.
In study, you have
to spend quality time, effort and energy to research, analyze and fully
understand and grasp concepts. Studying puts one in a better position to remember
most things in a subject compared to reading. Studying itself involves research
and learning.
One who had studied a topic/subject can easily teach it, while
the reverse is the case for someone who just read through it.
Hence an outstanding
student studies, and a good teacher/tutor had studied.
Study skills must be developed and good study habits must be
maintained and improved for one to study effectively.
What are study habits?
This is simply, how
one studies. These are regular practices or approach adopted by a person while
studying. Study habits are usually done to increase one’s learning outcomes and
pass tests.
What about study skills?
Study skills also
known as academic skills are set of developed strategies and practicable
result-oriented methods used by individuals to learn and study academic
materials.
Appropriate study
skills are needed especially when preparing for a particular evaluation and
increasing a person’s enthusiasm towards study.
Study skills and study habits are inseparable
entities. Good study habits can pave way for good study skills. The both are
required for success in academic activities especially getting good grades.
Effective study
habits
As you have known the definition of studying habits/skills,
then effective study habits shouldn’t be a tough bone to crack, i.e., to
