Most Higher Institutions may not be able to cope with the overwhelming number of applicants vying for placements into their various education programs.
These and many more might have contributed to the strict requirements for some academic programs in our tertiary institutions.
In Nigeria, one must pass through some processes and obtain some academic requisites in order to be considered for admission placement. Some persons may not gain admission, as a result of limited space currently in our tertiary institutions, especially if connected with big professional courses, viz; law, medicine, pharmacy, nursing, most engineering disciplines, accountancy and economics, dentistry and dental surgery, computer science etc.
Most of these professional courses are fiercely competed for in most Nigerian public Higher Institutions.
In our normal conventional universities, courses like law, engineering, accountancy, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, geology, dentistry, economics, mass communication, medical laboratory science, surveying and geoinformatics, computer science, management, optometry, administration, radiography and few others, are among the most sought courses.
Therefore, the universities ’departments of the above mentioned disciplines always record high number of applicants when compared to other courses like Efik, crop science, sociology, philosophy, religion, Igbo, animal science, biology, soil science, chemistry etc.
At the end of it all, it’s mostly the smartest, intelligent and deserving candidates make it into their respective institution and in their intended courses. At times intelligent and hardworking candidates can also lose admissions, depending on how they approach and handle their admission stuffs. For some other reasons, candidates may be moved to other department within an institution. This may be due to not being able to pass the cutoff mark, not coming from the institution’s catchment area, overpopulation of applicants and the rest.

But here we present to you some vital tips and hints you need in order to get admission easily in Nigerian tertiary institutions.
1.       Research about the institution you want to apply: know more about their admission modality. Find out their quota for applicants and also accreditation status. You can ask their old or returning students some vital questions if needed, but be wise to avoid being misguided. If you have the wherewithal, do not hesitate to visit the school before their admission screening.
2.       Consider the Institutions you fall under their catchment area. The catchment area of a university is just the area or region where the university can easily be accessed by the populace inhabiting the region of its location. Persons from a university’s catchment area are usually considered for admissions especially after their merit list is out. For instance any institution located in the northeast, will have Northeast as her catchment area, while one located in the southeast, will have the southeast states as her catchment area.
3.       Consider the course you are applying for in an institution and the benchmark: study and prepare very well to beat the cutoff point. For instance, if one is aspiring to study for MBBS degree in a federal and most state universities, endeavor to score 290+ in your UTME and about 85+ in the post-UTME test. The devil can’t deny you admission.
4.       Have your SSCE result ready. Not more than 2 sittings may be required, depending on the school’s policies. Either NECO & NECO or WAEC & WAEC likewise others (NABTEB,GCE,etc). Good grades are of great importance. Credit pass is the minimum, but As and Bs are will work best for you. This also goes to Direct Entry candidates. Your Alevel should be ready together with your SSCE. For instance Cambridge, JUPEB, GCE, NABTEB, IJMB A levels should not have less than credit passes in the subjects taken.
5.       Make sure you upload your SSCE and other relevant information required on JAMB portal, so that the board can approve your admission.
6.       You may consider applying courses that match your JAMB score
7.       You may also consider doing a school remedial program or predigree program/diploma before applying through JAMB into the institution. Most schools usually reserve quota for these category of candidates. This will also help one get accustomed to the institution’s environment and equally learn their modus operandi.  Passing through the program also boost candidates’ academic performance and can also reflect on their UTME results.
8.       You can check out the least competitive schools. If you are financially sound, you can try the private universities. Some state universities are less competitive compared to the federal universities. Newly established universities are also less competitive than old ones.
9.       Always check your JAMB CAPS and phone mail box to know when your admission is about being processed and approved. You can be notified at anytime if the institution wants to change or transfer you to another department. You are encouraged to approve the transfer and accept the admission as soon as it is processed if it interests you.
10.   You can effect a change of institution swiftly, if you think your current chosen institution might decline your application. Change of course can also be done as well, especially if the department in question is filled up or have massive applicants.

Hope information provided here will b beneficial to most prospective higher institution applicants.
