 Abu is one of the most prestigious universities in the country, occupying about 7000 hectares of land in the northern Nigeria of Kaduna state.

 The institution was founded on 4^th October of 1962 as the University of Northern Nigeria and was later renamed after the premier of northern region Sir Ahmadu Bello (1901-1966). Late Ahmadu Bello, also the Sarduana of Sokoto performed the opening ceremony of the university on 4^th October, 1962. In 1975, it was taken over by the federal government through a decree.

  ABU is a federal government research university located in Kaduna State with 2 campuses; Samaru and kongo campus. The institution had helped the emergence of two other universities, Bayero University, Kano(formerly Abdullahi Bayero College & Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University ofTtechnology. Bauchi (formerly, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa College).

Abu has 5 institutes, 6 specialized centers, a school of Basic and Remedial studies, a Division of Agric college, a Demonstration Secondary school and a Consultancy outfit providing various services to the university and the society.

  The university currently has about 1400 academic and research staff and over 6000 non-teaching senior and junior administrative staff. ABU has 12 faculties, a postgraduate school and 82 academic programmes.
